Overview

Your new Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses are a powerful tool for navigating the world as a person who is blind or has low vision. With the built in AI, connections to sensors on your phone and built in speakers, your glasses can direct you home, help you find nearby spots to eat or connect to smart mobility aides.

To get you started navigating with the Meta Glasses we’ve created this guide to highlight the full navigation features, how they work and how you can use them.

What navigation features are available on the Ray-Ban Meta glasses

Voice-activated directions

When heading somewhere new, just say, "Hey Meta, navigate to [place]" and the AI glasses will guide you. They’ll provide audio directions as you walk using your phone’s GPS as guidance.

Real-time route updates through Meta AI

Sometimes plans change but your AI glasses keep up. If you drift off course or take a different route, Meta AI quietly recalculates and updates your path in real time, giving you up-to-the-minute directions without pulling out your phone.

Currently pedestrian navigation is only available in select cities, with more being rolled out regularly.

Hands free map queries

You can find out all about the shops, cafes, restaurants and landmarks all around you. Just ask your AI glasses. Say, "Hey Meta, what's nearby?" or "Hey Meta, how far is that café?" and get instant, real-time answers from Meta AI.

Audio cues

Stay aware as you explore. Open-ear speakers deliver navigation prompts and AI responses without blocking the sounds around you.

Connection with accessories

Mobility aids like the WeWalk Smart Cane 2 can connect to the Meta Glasses to support you while you’re out and about. The WeWalk Smart Cane uses the Meta Glasses’ speakers to provide enhanced feedback from the cane. This, plus other future accessories, will make getting around your community easier.

How the navigation features work

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes while you’re using your AI glasses. Let’s break down how your AI glasses work.

How the AI glasses understand your surroundings

The Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses takes advantage of a combination of inbuilt sensors, and your phone to provide accurate, hands-free navigation. Utilising your phone’s GPS and mobile signal, it pinpoints where you are and feeds that into Meta’s AI. At the same time, the camera helps the glasses understand what's in front of you.

So, when you ask, "Hey Meta, what's nearby?" the camera enables Meta AI to recognise signs, storefronts and landmarks, while the GPS pinpoints your location. This helps deliver relevant and location-aware answers, then direct you to where you want to go.

What you hear and use

After your glasses have processed your motion, visuals and voice commands, they deliver guidance straight to your ears, fully hands-free. Audio cues and voice prompts play through the open-ear speakers to give clear directions and AI responses while keeping you aware of the sounds around you.

Essential tips for navigating with AI glasses

Now that you know what your new Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses can do for navigation and how it works, it’s time to hit the streets. With these essential habits you’ll make every journey easier.

1. Use voice commands to stay hands-free and aware

Your AI glasses let you navigate and explore nearby spots with just your voice, keeping your hands free and your attention on the world around you.

Try these "Hey Meta" prompts:

  • "Hey Meta, take me to [destination]." Start turn-by-turn directions instantly.
  • "Hey Meta, where's the nearest [location]?" Discover nearby landmarks or businesses.
  • "Hey Meta, next turn." Hear your upcoming turn without looking down.
  • "Hey Meta, show points of interest nearby." Effortlessly explore places around you.
  • "Hey Meta, repeat the last directions." Refresh your previous instructions on the go.

2. Preview your route before you go

A quick check of your route before you head off sets you up for a smoother walk. Open the Meta AI app and pair your glasses over Bluetooth so that navigation syncs properly. Set your destination, either by typing it in or by saying, "Hey Meta, navigate to [destination]".

Take a moment to scan the route for narrow alleys, unusual intersections or spots where GPS might wobble. This helps you stay aware and walk confidently without pausing or reaching for your phone.
