The Plextor PTX Wi-Fi player has been a reliable player for many years. In recent months, clients have experienced significant performance issues due to the Plextor PTX Wi-Fi Player’s aging technology. Microsoft has instigated changes which result in the protocol within the Plextor PTX Wi-Fi players no longer being supported and all Plextor PTX Wi-Fi players will cease to function at the end of March 2026.

Vision Australia Library are committed to supporting all affected clients in their transition to a new audio player. Please review the following Frequently Asked Questions, to understand how this change may affect you.

Information about the transition from Plextor PTX Wi-Fi players

The players will stop working at the end of March 2026.

If your player stops now and you haven’t yet had a chat with one of our librarians about player options, please give us a call and we’ll get you moved onto a new player ASAP. We can’t replace your current Plextor PTX Wi-Fi player with the same machine, as we have done in the past when they’ve been faulty.

Yes, you do. As the Plextor PTX Wi-Fi player will no longer be supported you will need to move to another player if you want to continue to receive your library service.

Yes, absolutely. Your new player will provide you access to our entire library of books and other reading material, just like now. Your new player will connect with your library account, so you’ll keep getting your preferred books.  Importantly, the bookshelf you have now will be retained and available on your new player.

Devices

There is a range of new player options to suit your needs. These are:

  • Daisybox Player – a Network connected big-button audio player
  • Envoy Connect – a compact and easy to use audiobook player that doesn’t require an internet connection
  • VA Connect app – our library app has been designed for easy use and convenience and is compatible on iOS and Android devices

Further details on these products are available on the access the library page.

Whichever player you choose, you will experience an improvement. As the Plextor PTX Wi-Fi player is an older device, we were experiencing degradation of the quality of the experience. The new, more modern devices, perform much better.

Vision Australia post new devices to our clients.

Yes, each player has been designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Our Vision Australia Library team has worked with the manufacturers to develop products that are specifically for people with blindness and low vision. All information on how to use the devices will be provided, and further support is available if needed.

Daisybox:

  • Large button desktop player
  • Access to listen to Vision Australia Radio
  • Cable or Wi-Fi internet connection, or owner supplied 4G Modem (when no network is available)

Envoy Connect:

  • Small and portable
  • Basic user-friendly interface
  • Battery powered with solar charging
  • Download onto the player via a PC, or send by post to VA Library to load for you

VA Connect app:

  • Use on an owner supplied mobile phone or tablet
  • Can be used online or offline
  • Easily search and add books to your bookshelf
  • Android or IOS (Apple)

Having two Envoy devices allows you to send one back to the library to get a refreshed bookshelf of books, while still having one at home for listening. Many clients who have library supported Envoys appreciate this, but if you would like to load your Envoy device yourself with your home PC you do not need a second device.

The mask for the Envoy is an optional accessory. It can be useful as it adds great tactility to the device. Our library team can discuss the tactile mask with you, should you opt to use an Envoy player.

Information about all the devices can be found on the access the library page.
