From February 2027, there are two key changes happening that may affect you or your child if you receive NDIS funding. These changes relate to what happens when your plan ends and how decisions are made about the supports that can be funded in your plan.
Understanding these changes can help you prepare for what may happen when your plan ends and what to think about if you are requesting funded supports for your child.
Change 1: Plan renewals and unspent funds
From February 2027, the NDIA may reassess your plan when it ends or, if it is working well for you, create a new one with the same supports. This is called a plan renewal.
It’s important to know that any unspent funds from your previous plan will not roll over to the new one.
Change 2: Clearer reasonable and necessary funding rules
The second change is to the reasonable and necessary funding criteria, which inform decisions about the supports funded in plans.
Clearer rules now explain the supports parents are expected to provide, such as supervision, personal care, transport and emotional or behavioural support.
The NDIS will continue to fund the additional support a child needs because of their disability, compared with other children of the same age.
However, there will likely be an increased focus on the quality of evidence you need to provide to have these supports funded.
