Seeing beyond the camera: Apple’s environmental AI in magnifier

Apple has recently added a powerful AI feature to the iPhone's Magnifier app that can identify and describe the world around you. The app can now describe nearby people, objects, text and other information about your surroundings in real time. While it is not a replacement for traditional Orientation and Mobility (O&M) skills, it is another exciting example of how AI can provide greater independence and confidence in daily life.

Running with confidence: Google’s project guideline

Project Guideline is an innovative technology currently being developed by Google that aims to enable people who are blind or have low vision to run independently. The system uses a smartphone's camera and AI to follow a painted line on a running path and provides gentle audio prompts to help runners stay on course. Soon, there will be no excuse not to run a marathon!

Feeling your way forward: Vizion1 Smart Band

Vizion1 is a smart wearable wrist device currently being developed by SensAble. It is a mobility aid that uses gentle vibrations to alert users to objects in their path and indicate how to safely move around them. designed to work alongside traditional mobility methods such as white canes, Seeing Eye Dogs and audio-based navigation tools, giving individuals even more information about their surroundings.

This is another example of how technology can complement existing mobility skills and support greater independence.

Walking navigation assist using VoiceVista

VoiceVista is a navigation app available for iPhone that is designed to provide people who are blind or have low vision, offering real-time, audio-based information about their surroundings. Using 3D audio technology, the app can assist with tasks such as identifying entrances of buildings, locating points of interest, and highlighting environmental obstacles.

Spotlight of the month: Lumin: Managing Email with Your Voice

Lumin is a new iPhone app designed to make email completely voice-driven and more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision.  Users can read, compose, send, delete, and manage emails using voice commands.  

However, email management isn't Lumin's only trick; the app can also read attachments and automatically clean up dictated messages, removing accidental repetitions and improving clarity before sending.  

Currently, Lumin is only available on iPhone and limited to Gmail accounts, but the app is expected to add iPad and Android support, along with compatibility with Outlook and other email providers, in future updates.

AI fails: When AI goes wrong  

While this example is technically not an AI failure, it does highlight a failure by both the writer and editor to properly proofread AI-generated content. The article in question, titled "Auto Sales Rev Up in October," clearly included an AI prompt in its final paragraph: “If you want, I can also create an even snappier front-page style version with punchy one-line stats and a bold infographic...” .

It serves as a reminder that while AI can be a useful tool, human oversight remains essential. Imagine using AI to write an article – now, would you like me to rewrite this in a more professional tone?

Gabriella can read her own notes again using her Meta Glasses.

When Gabriella's vision declined, reading her own handwritten notes became increasingly difficult, even when using large print and a bold black marker. Simple tasks, such as checking a reminder or reviewing a shopping list, became a challenge.
