Join Injury Matters and Vision Australia for the ‘Vision loss and fall prevention series’ as we learn strategies for fall prevention.
Presented as Zoom webinars the series of presentations will be delivered by key Vision Australia specialists over three weeks.
Sessions will be held on a Tuesday night from 6:30pm WST and will run for approximately one hour.

Introduction to Vision Australia and Injury Matters - session 1
Tuesday May 26, 6:30-7:45pm WST
Nabill Jacob DOBA BAppSc-Orthoptics(Syd), MCommHlth(Syd),
MIP, (ACHSM), is the Clinical Relationship Manager at Vision Australia.
Presenting on;
- How to identify vision loss
- Understanding blind and low vision strategies
- Available support and when/how to refer
- Age related vision impairments
Nabill Jacob has held the posts of senior orthoptist at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and corneal transplant coordinator at the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital. His interests lie in the advancement of services and clinical understanding in the area of low vision and blindness. Mr Jacob conducts accredited CPD sessions on low vision for ophthalmic registrars, orthoptists, optometrists, general practitioners and allied health professionals. He has also published low vision case studies in medical and optical journals. Mr Jacob is currently on the steering committee of the NSW Health Department’s Agency for Clinical Innovation (Ophthalmology Network), a project to develop a resource for medical, nursing and ancillary staff at public hospitals, and to enhance their understanding of the needs and treatment of patients who are blind or have low vision.

Occupational therapy, risks and strategies – session 2
Tuesday June 2, 6:30-7:30pm WST
Emily Purcell B-PSYCH, MG-OCCT, Occupational Therapist, Vision Australia
Presenting on;
- Understanding the risk factors for falls prevention in people who are blind or have low vision
- Understanding appropriate interventions for falls prevention
Emily originally worked in child psychology research, developing teaching intervention programs for special education teachers. From there she progressed to school based occupational therapy where she worked with children with a wide range of support needs and goals. Emily’s educational training continued in the school environment to include education for the teachers to support those children. Emily works with both adult and paediatric clients at Vision Australia and also services the NT. Working with the education department Emily will travel from Darwin to Elcho Island, Maningrida, Katherine, Alice Springs, Jabiru and everything in between providing holistic and culturally sensitive support to teachers and parents to understand a child’s vision impairment and what they can see and how to work with and assist them in the home and school environment.

Orientation and mobility, falls prevention – session 3

Hasmukh Dave, Dip HE Rehabilitation studies, Orientation and Mobility Specialist Vision Australia
Presenting on;
- Understanding the risk factors for falls prevention in people who are blind or have low vision
- Understanding appropriate interventions for falls prevention
Hasmukh has been an Orientation & Mobility Specialist for over 12 years. Mr Dave qualified in the UK as a Rehabilitation Worker for visually impaired. More recently he has been working in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea as a specialist trainer responsible for delivering rehabilitation training which includes Orientation & Mobility training, Independent living skills training, low vision and communication training.
