On Tuesday 14 October, the eve of White Cane Day, Wollongong City Council, Vision Australia Wollongong and TAFE Wollongong launched a campaign to show how small actions can have a big impact on the lives of people with blindness or low vision.

The purpose of the Keep it Clear campaign is to raise community awareness of the challenges and issues people who are blind or have low vision face while navigating their way around the built environment of the Wollongong Local Government Area.

The six posters were developed with the guidance and assistance of seven Vision Australia clients and depict everyday scenarios where the public can make small changes that will have a big impact.

The Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cllr Gordon Bradbery said “Overall, the campaign is about being thoughtful and exercising common decency.”

Aileen Muscat, one of the vision impaired participants, spoke of how proud she was to have participated in the campaign and expressed her thanks to the TAFE students for their kindness. “I’m delighted about the Keep it Clear campaign. It is important to educate the community so they can help us travel in a safe environment,” she said.
