Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.
Sam is joined this week on the program by Loc Tang, a participant in Speak My Language, an online podcast series about of Australians with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Loc tells his story of arriving from Vietnam as a teenager, and his lived experience of vision loss which impacted on his work, hobbies and independence but also how he found new passions like oil painting, and possibly getting involved in blind sports in the new year.
“I thought if I could help one person by sharing my story and talking about my experience with vision loss, then it's worthwhile putting the effort in,” Loc said.
He initially had some reservations about appearing on Speak My Language to tell his story as it had been a few decades since he was speaking Vietnamese every day.
With the increasing presence of the internet and technology in the meantime there was a whole range of new vocabulary he had to get his head around, but he found the process of recording the podcast made him feel welcome and comfortable to tell his story in his own words.
“The interviewer was very helpful, she basically asked me to write everything down about what I wanted to say in English, and she would help translate it into Vietnamese for me, that gave me a great deal of confidence,” he said.
