Check in and Chat with Vision Australia

Vision Australia has launched a new series of free webinars to help people stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every Tuesday and Thursday we’ll be holding our Check in and Chat webinars via Zoom, a communications platform.

Zoom is both accessible and fully secure. You can join Zoom from your phone, computer or tablet device from the safety and comfort of your own home.

Check in and Chat Webinars will run for 30-40 minutes and each session will be hosted by Vision Australia experts. We’ll be covering a range of different topics, including technology, entertainment, health and wellbeing and more. View past webinars here.

Attendees will also be able to have their questions answered by our experts. You can ask questions in advance by calling 1300 84 74 66 or emailing checkinandchat@visionaustralia.org.

Check in and Chat webinars are free, but you will need to register to attend. You can find details of upcoming webinars below, or email checkinandchat@visionaustralia.org for more information.

Joining Check in and Chat webinars

You will need to book for each Check in and Chat webinar, by completing the online registration form.

Once you have booked, you’ll receive an email with a link to join via Zoom. To join, you just click the link at the time the webinar starts.

If you would like help to set up Zoom on your device or have technical issues relating to Zoom, you can contact the Vision Australia Assistive Technology Help Desk. This is a free service for Vision Australia clients. Call 1300 84 74 66 and ask for the AT Helpdesk, or email athelp@visionaustralia.org.

In this live online session, Nicola Cotton will give us tips about how to keep our pets healthy and happy. Nicola oversees Vision Australia’s veterinary services, breeding program and puppy centre.

Join special guest, style guru Chloe Naughton, Melbourne Fashion Festival's fashion programmer. Chloe is abreast of all the latest trends and news in the industry, and together with Vision Australia's Vildana Praljak and Polly Goodwin, will cover the below topics:

  • What’s trending on Australian catwalks
  • How to figure out what looks good on you
  • Tips for shopping online
  • Blind and low vision friendly fashion resources and sites.

In this Check in and Chat session, you'll hear from Melissa Fanshawe, a university lecturer and trained teacher for students who are blind or have low vision. Melissa will discuss learning online, and some topics that will be covered are outlined below:

  • Getting set up with support and technology
  • Problem solving and advocating for your needs.

Topic: Magnifying and lighting your tasks (11am AEST)

You will hear tips and strategies for magnifying and lighting your tasks. Our expert guest speaker is Tony Wu, who is an accredited orthoptist with expertise in low vision and adaptive technology for people with a vision impairment.

Some areas for discussion are:

  • Common vision discomforts and challenges
  • The role of orthoptists in helping you maximize your remaining vision
  • Tips to enable you to perform different tasks
  • Magnification and lighting solutions.

Join Emily Purcell to discuss taking care of your mental health. Emily is an occupational therapist at Vision Australia and also has a psychology degree.

Some topics that will be covered include:

  • Identifying and systematically managing stressors in your daily routines
  • Building a buffer against stress with good sleep, diet and exercise
  • Other healthy habits to give you head space
  • Mindfulness exercises
