What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is one of the ways people who are blind or have low vision can access funding and support. Including help with activities in the community and access assistive technology, the NDIS enables you to tailor support and services for your individual needs and goals.

The NDIS is administered by a government body known as the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

Vision Australia and the NDIS

We’ve been working alongside the NDIS since it started, helping Australians who are blind or have low vision live life the life they choose.

To get started on the NDIS, you’ll need to submit an access request form to the NDIA outlining how your eye condition impacts your daily life.

You’ll need to provide evidence as part of the request – this could be information from your GP, or a recent ophthalmology report that details your eye condition.

Once your access request has been approved by the NDIA, you should receive a call from a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA planner to arrange a time for your planning meeting.

If you are organising NDIS for your child and they are aged under seven, you’ll be contacted by an Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) Partner.

Now’s the time to get prepared by laying out all your requirements and goals to ensure you get the right amount and type of funding. We can work with you to help identify what you need and what support is available, as well as giving you advice on what to ask and how best to prepare for the meeting.

Now you’re prepared for your planning meeting, and ready to talk about all your requirements and needs. Once you receive your NDIS plan, contact us so we can help you understand and make the most of your funding.

What is funded by the NDIS?

The support available under the NDIS must relate to your disability and help you achieve your goals and needs. It covers support like travel to get to work, support workers to help you access the community; support around the home (like gardening and cleaning); and support to build your skills in areas such as cooking and technology training.
