Braille training for adults

What is the aim of the training

Through direct programs (face-to-face or correspondence), Braille Services aims to facilitate the learning of braille reading and writing skills for those clients who have a reading and writing goal and have been identified as having vision such that they will need to access information through braille or through a combination of print and braille. Courses for people who are sighted are also available.

What's on offer?

Courses in grade I and grade II are offered through face to face sessions at the following location: Victoria (Melbourne -Kensington), NSW (Sydney -Enfield and Coffs Harbour) .  Courses run throughout the year. These courses are delivered through group or individual programs and involve attendance at one or two hour sessions, once or twice weekly, depending on client need.

Correspondence courses are available to anyone in NSW, VIC, ACT, QLD and TAS.  Clients may commence these courses at any time throughout the year. 

Grade I Braille

Cost: course material $30

You are also required to hire a Perkins brailler, (common braille writing tool); this is $60 for 6 months plus $50 deposit.

Grade II Braille

Cost: There are three modules; each module is $30.
You are also required to hire a Perkins Brailler; this is $60 for 6 months plus $50 deposit.

Courses for People who are DeafBlind

Vision Australia provides braille training for adults who are DeafBlind.  These are individual programs which are aimed and prepared to meet the needs of the individual learner. This service is only offered to clients in the Sydney and Wollongong metropolitan area.

Braille for people who are sighted

Vision Australia offers Grade I and Grade II braille courses for people with sight which teaches the participant how to read and/or write braille with their eyes. These courses are through correspondence and are available to anyone in NSW, VIC, ACT, QLD and TAS.  Participants may commence at any time throughout the year.

Cost
Grade I: $75
Grade II: There are three modules; each module is $75.

The hire of a Perkins brailler is optional.
