About volunteering at Vision Australia
Each month thousands of volunteers give their time and skills for free, working in a range of capacities. Their inspiring generosity helps Vision Australia to manage costs so our essential services can be offered free-of-charge to tens of thousands of people who are blind or have low vision.
By volunteering you can gain new skills and confidence, make friends and have fun while you enjoy the sense of reward that comes from really making a difference. We can help people find a position that best fulfils their interests.
Who volunteers?
Vision Australia volunteers come from all walks of life, including:
- Parents with spare time during the day
- Professionals who want to be involved in their community
- Companies that donate their staff's time and expertise
- People seeking new skills and work experience
- Service groups such as Rotary and Lions Clubs
- Retirees who want to meet new people, help others and stay active.
Volunteer roles
Opportunities vary according to where volunteers live, but can include:
- Being a puppy carer or assisting with our collection dog program in your local area
- Supporting clients in and around out centres
- Helping out at our Op Shops
- Assisting with administrative tasks
- Working as part of the talking newspaper network
- Help out on Vision Australia Radio
- Speaking at schools and in the community
- Assisting with our heritage collection
- Offering library support
- Assisting with special events, for example wrapping gifts or helping out at Myer Gift Wrap or Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight®
- Helping with recreation and sport programs
All Vision Australia volunteers are asked to complete a short training session before they start. This helps them to understand the needs of people who are blind or have low vision and provides an opportunity to learn new skills.
