IMB Theatre, Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, 2 Burelli St.Wollongong
One of the founders of Wollongong’s original professional theatre company,
Theatre South, Katherine Thomson has written one of the great Australian plays. Set in Wollongong during the economic rationalism of the ‘80s, Diving for Pearls is both iconic and startlingly relevant.
With the town she grew up in changing all around her, Barbara is determined to change with it. Dreaming of a way out, she sets her sights on a job at one of the new resorts popping up all over town. Meanwhile, Den is having change forced upon him. The steelworks he’s worked at his whole life has been sold and Den must reinvent himself to survive. The arrival of Barbara’s daughter, Verge, just might be the thing that tips Barbara and Den over the edge.
Australia’s most acclaimed new-writing company, Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company continues its tradition of reviving the very best of Australian works, with a vibrant new production of Diving for Pearls. Directed by Darren Yap (Letters to Lindy) and starring Helpmann Award-winning actor Ursula Yovich, this is a vivid, dramatic and wryly hilarious testament to a significant period in the history of Australian industrial communities.
