Audio Description on TV

Tell the whole story

People who are blind or have low vision are unable to get the full experience of Australian television due to a lack of audio description, a vital verbal commentary that fills in the gaps for viewers who are blind or have low vision, or those who find it difficult to understand the visual content.

We’re working with other organisations in the blindness and low vision sector to advocate for:

  • The Australian Government to move without further delay to mandate minimum targets for audio description on all free-to-air television networks in Australia;
  • The Australian Government to ensure that the ABC provides a permanent audio service on iview.

To get a sense of how audio description works and how it enhances a viewer’s experience, watch this non-audio described version of the trailer for ‘Frozen’ with your eyes shut. Then watch this audio-described version of the trailer. You’re bound to notice a difference.
